Society of Graduate Students (SOGS) Leadership Opportunities

Any part time or full time graduate student is a member of the Society of Graduate Students or SOGS, which is governed by a council and executive board. If you are interested in becoming a councillor for your department, contact SOGS immediately. Anyone interested in a Councillor position must be nominated by two peers from the same department.

SOGS is also looking for interested graduate students to sit on various commitees. These committees oversee the operations of the Grad Club; they manage the Society’s finances and health plan; they coordinate the Graduate Student Teaching Awards, the Western Research Forum, and the Western Journal of Graduate Research; they help international students; they develop the Society’s Policy Manual, Bylaws, and Constitution; and they work on issues pertinent to graduate students. To express appreciation for the work of these committees, SOGS gives every SOGS committee member a $5.00 voucher for the Grad Club for every meeting attended.

For planning and carrying out advocacy work, four SOGS committees are especially relevant. The Graduate Student Issues Committee (GSIC) is the committee most concerned with general advocacy, issues, and campaigns. The Equity Committee (EC) deals with issues of human rights, discrimination, and accessibility. The Sustainability Committee (SC) handles matters pertaining specifically to environmental protection. Lastly, the International Graduate Students’ Issues Committee (IGSIC) deals with matters of concern to international graduate students. Together, these four committees are the grassroots foundation of SOGS’ advocacy work. Any graduate student member of SOGS is eligible to join a committee.
